Continuity for Leaders
How to govern what you can’t personally explain
Core stance
Leaders do not need to understand everything. They need to know whether understanding exists.
The leader’s continuity test
Leaders should be able to ask:
- Who can explain this?
- Why does it exist?
- What happens if it fails?
- What would trigger change?
If no one can answer, continuity risk exists.
Governing without micromanaging
Continuity allows leaders to:
- Trust systems without blindness
- Delegate without abdication
- Scale authority safely
Exercises
- Identify one system you cannot explain
- Ask for its decision record
- Ask for its failure story
Suggested next step
Make continuity questions part of leadership review.
